I, uhm... I got a set of stylish phones. Lets leave it like that =) Actually, I remembered yesterday I had the A8s lying around somewhere, and since someone asked about them, I decided to give them one more try. Who knows, maybe I was just too harsh on them. I took out "I Robot", by The Alan Parsons Project, track 5: The Voice. It has a funky, 70s feel to it, with lots of detail, slamming bass and a small orchestra to boot. I tested all (except my Sportas) my headphones in the following order: 1) Senn 490s (now only used for computer games). 2) B&O's A8. 3) Senn 580s. 4) MS-1s. I thought that using my worst headphones (490s) before the A8s might make things better. Guess what. The 490s sound like heaven. And the 580s sound like out of this world. The MS-1s sound a tad bright, but impressive nonetheless. At least after listening to the A8s. Once again: Bass is severely lacking on the lower scales. While the MS-1s and the 580s seem to thump at the slightest insinuation (and the 490s produce a rumble) the A8s simply won't even try to play them. Only upper bass is played, nicely though for a set of earphones. Mids are "hooty". Try talking with your hands cupped in front of your mouth. That's what I am trying to say. As if the middle frequencies were over-emphasized. On comparison, the A8s are the PA system used in schools while the Senns are a classical orchestra in a well tuned concert hall. Treble is non-existant. On the middle part of "The Voice", there is a section with the orchestra, drum kit and bass. There are tons of special effects and little details all over it. Listening through the A8s, you only get the orchestra music, the drum kit and the bass. No details. No air. No nada. And the treble you get sounds incredibly harsh and metallic. No doubt. I have to do something with this headphones. Maybe voodoo will help.
