Hi Jan... I am a happy owner of a AKG 271 Studio myself... although I havent had the pleasure of compairing them against these new beyers... just wondering if you gave them some time to burn in before the compairison? I have noticed a huge increase in the detail of these cans after burn in and the lower end really opened up, which might make that upper midrange a little less empasized... I have noticed the problem with the cabling that you pointed out... I'm thinking about getting a custom made cable in the future... but I know nothing about it, and need to do a little research... its not a huge problem for me anyways as I am usually stationary when listening to them (on the bus or at home)... oh btw... they may be less flashy than a lot of these silver cans on the market... but now that I'm used to them I think they look great.
