OK, Apheared, (you too, livingplasma) I can think up the following but couldn't do it myself. Take the guts out of a dead 9v battery. Leave the contacts. Using the surface mount version of all this stuff, build a basic cmoy amp that will fit inside the battery case. (Pigtails and external volume pot OK.) Wire the power supply in to the battery contacts, backwards, e.g. with reversed polarity. Here's the cool part: to power up, take a live battery and clip it on to the battery/amp. So what you have is an amp that consists of two 9v batteries clipped together by the contacts. Ought to fit in a shirt pocket... To run it at 18v, clip one battery to each terminal and connect the batteries with a clip. You could even put a switch and led on the battery clip wires if you wanted to be fancy. Or, you could have a second 9v battery shell with that stuff in it. So the simple version would have two batteries clipped together, and you know it's on when they are clipped together. The 18v version would have four battery cases, all nose-to-nose, in two pairs, one pair rotated 90 degrees with respect to the other. One pair is batteries, the other pair has the amp in one and the power switch and led in the other. Apheared, you can do it, I know you can! Just as soon as you learn to solder surface mount stuff by hand under a microscope. :) [Edited by Ben (01-21-2001 at 09:27 AM).] |

Apheared, it occurs to me that the Penguin Mint Box amp would be a great seller at Linux conferences! Personally, I think this penguin design is snazzier than the one chosen by Linus Torvalds, which looks kind of dazed. [Edited by cmoy (01-20-2001 at 02:48 PM).] |

Thanks. Although they are great as what you used to use mints for, covering coffee breath... 3 double espressos and 12 mints and the day starts off in full swing. I I I I was gonna say something else, but I lost my train of... what were we talking about again? Side effects? what side effects? side effects of what? And, just in case you're not completely SICK of people sending you uses for empty tins, I present: The Penguin Headphone Amplifier. Not just an amp, but an audiophile-quality one to boot. Incredible gain (enough to destroy most headphones) as befitting it's illustrious case.Sorry about the hole in Pengie's gut, the LED looks best there at the center of the radials, looks quite errie in a dark room. Check it out, and hey invest my money wisely. Buy a 'Vette or something. :) http://headwize.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/000801.html Seeya, From: "Adam Smith" <adam@peppermints.com> To: "Mr. Apheared" <apheared@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: Thanks for the buzz Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 10:41:38 -0800 MIME-Version: 1.0 Michael, You rule.
