So I was at my local pawn shop and spotted something cool and unusual. A pair of Audio Technics TK-33 Elecret Headphones. I made sure they were in working order and was offered $40.

I've been trying to find some information about them but didn't find much. Then I read through the Head Wize article about different types of headphones. In there it talks about electret depolarization and to check them every 5 to 10 years.

I'm guessing these are 80's vintage and not knowing the previous owner I will have to assume that they have never been replaced.

Question:
How do I tell from listening that the polarizing material needs replacing? I'll assume that it will be a gradual decrease in sound or quality? Is there some method of testing to determine if there are bad? Where would I get replacements for them?

They sound good so far. I've compared them to my Sony 7506 and Grado SR-125 cans. They defiantly sound softer then the others. But not knowing how they are suppose to sound I'm not sure what to think.

Edit:
I did find some info. AKA Audio-Technica ATH-8.

Yes, electret transducers can and do depolarize over time. That "softer" sound you're hearing could be an indication. Does one channel seem brighter than the other? A channel imbalance would be another indication. I once owned the ATH7s. It's a shame that AT is no longer repairing them. Enjoy them as-is.
