I think there could also be a list of DIY DACs on this list. To start it off, you could add the Alien DAC: http://www.myexp...c/overview.html

The other one is the one offered by AudioWorkshop - www.audioworkshop.com.hk - the d3, I have one, it sounds nice - am interested to see how the Alien one sounds.

The New and improved LISA-III Docs. www.esnips.com/web/lisa-iii

To the starter of this thread:

Please make the link to this headamp working, the link on page one is not working correct.

I have had quite some problem to reach the LISA-III thread on the PPL site. Other amp sites are much more directly approachable and get only by that more attention. This amp deserves the same attention in my humble opinion.

Only the 'esnips' documents are now directly linked. But when there are several other posts to follow all this will dissapear in the total of posts whithin this thread. That looks to me a pitty because when I looked into all of the devellopement process and specs on this little higher-end amp I get more interested.

It is a pitty that this amp has not get more attention on Headwize, untill now. It has some interesting disign aspects and choises of qualities of components. Also there is a group-buy coming up!

Within this thread it is off topic to post on content (I have some points), so I am going to the PPL thread itself (untill someone opens a thread on Headwize of course, in my humble opinion I can/will not be that person).

The link has been changed.

Let me know when the group buy will be on and I'll add that to the list too. Also, if you can give a total cost of the amp (or range) please do so.

Thank you.

I thought Yeo's Monica dac kit may still qualify as it is available as a naked board for those who want to stuff it themselves. http://www.diypa...545bdackit.html , I will leave it up to you whether or not you want to add it to the list. dB

I must add that the cost for the aikido can be significantly less. my total is $500 plus because I'm using $1+ resistors. and the non-essential caps are solens. and the output caps are metallized polypro.

you could go cheap on this parts and cost would be significantly less.

my power supply is tube rectified and regulated so half of the total cost would go to just the power supply. Again significant savings can be made using a simple CRC (or CRCRC). Tubecad.com has a link somewhere to a pdf with a very simple power supply schematic. not regulated but it does the job.

You can use vishay-dale for the resistors. orange drops for the caps and electrolytics (there are so many inexpensive values around for the required value).

I think the minimum starting cost would be $150 without the bells and whistles.

Assuming money is no object, how could I modify the Cmoy headphone amp to make two 3-6" JBL speakers scream?

I like your nickname Curly.. Fan of This American Life are we?

Anyway, to answer your question: You'd have to modify the Cmoy headphone amp so drastically, it'd no longer be a Cmoy. Speakers have very low impedences (typically 4, 8 or 16 ohms) while the Cmoy headphone amplifier is designed to work best with high impedence headphones. At the very least, you'd need to have a headphone amplifier with a buffered output. You have a lot of options here including, but not limited to a PIMETA, a PPA v2, an M^3, a Dynalo, a Dynahi. Or, you could use a Cmoy with its output ocnnected to the input of a Szerekes amp (design also available on Headwize).

That said, if you want to drive speakers - I think you'd be better to search out something called a gainclone.

As a noob, I will throw my 2 cents into this thread:

this is the best run down of DIY amps I've seen, including on some other DIY sites mentioned here. Not that one forum is better than the other, I know most here are members on both, but as a noob, this little list has helped quite a bit in my understanding and planning stage for building my first 3 amps <smile>

Thank you everyone for contributing!

I suggest you add some shunt regulators to your power supply section, as in the low power range that headphones fall in they are not impractical.

I'll have surface mount version of the PCB shortly.
Excuse me, cmoy, for linking to another forum...

I also notice people mentioned DACs for the list as well. Whatever the chip you choose, if it's a current-output DAC, you want to use a really good I/V. The best I've come across is presented in Figures 4.1-4.4 in http://www.aes.o...e.cfm?elib=9146
I suggest reducing the current feedback from what is in the article; some that have built varieties of this in two other forums removed the current feedback completely and prefer it that way.

Let me know when your PCB is ready with a link (or should I use the one above?) and I'll add it to the master list.

I'm away from home right now, until the 21st, but I'll try to install Eagle here and finish it; otherwise, it will be near the end of the month.

Do you remember the BOM cost? And how would you compare it?

Prune,

Are there any more details you can give? E.g., link to website with BOM, description, etc. I'll add it to the "list" when you provide the additional information.

Thanks. <big grin>

<smile> BOM is a "Bill of Materials", just a list of the components that you used, preferably where you got them and how much they cost as well.
