So the HD280 sound was good?

Then how about the Sennheiser HD212 or HD25-1 (not the 25SP, which has been controversial)?

I definitely check out the Audio Technica A500 that MX recommended and also the classic ATH-M50S (see below). You might also like the Sony V6 which benefit from changing the earpads to ones made by Beyerdynamic.

Are you referring to the ATH-M50S? I googled this model and found that the price varies from about $100 on eBay to $150 from several retailers. With the 2/1 euro/dollar ratio, that shouldbe within your range. These places may be in the US but some will ship overseas.

yes the ATH-M50S, the gbp to dollar exchange rate is currently at
1 gbp to 1 usd, pathetic, not long ago it was 2 dollars to the pound.

It's not quite as bad as 1/1. XE.com says the exchange rate is 1.4UKP / dollar. That means if you buy on eBay for about $100 US, it's within your budget not factoring in postage. You have to be careful of counterfeit merchandise on eBay and find a seller willing to ship where you are.

Searched ebay.co.uk and found several pairs of ATH-MS0S headphones going for around 75 UKP. You need assurances that they're not counterfeits before committing.

If you are into the whole foldup deal.... IMO the best choice are the Equation Audio RP-21s

"Eartools" is the name of the Equation headphone line, I think. So, the RP21 is an "Eartool".

Have you read the online reviews for these phones?

Now, I haven't auditioned the M50 myself, but the M40 has been around a long time. The sound of the M40 (which I also have NOT heard) is said to be on the bass-y side and its appearance isn't as finely crafted, but it is cheaper, if your budget is straining.

i have read reviews for both and both seem good, however i am a little apprehensive about the bulkyness of the rp-21 and like the looks of the athm50, however the m50s is 120 pound where as the rp-21 is 110 inc post

I wouldn't let the 10UKP difference dissuade you. If necessary, wait a while to save up money.
